Our founder and CEO, Jonathan Gerber, RN, MBA, is featured in The Top 100 Innovators & Entrepreneurs. The profile tells the story many of our clients have heard over the years: how Jon built The Medcor Group from nothing in 2004 into a revenue cycle management partner that federally qualified health centers across the country count on for billing, credentialing and coding.
From Navy Corpsman To Health Care Executive
Jon came to revenue cycle work the long way, and the path shows in how he runs Medcor. He understands health care from the clinical side and the business side, and he has worked in both.
- Navy And Fleet Marine CorpsmanServed during Vietnam, his first role in health care.
- Clinical And Business TrainingEarned an RN, a BS and an MBA in finance, and worked as a stockbroker along the way.
- Three Decades Of Health Care LeadershipExecutive roles for hospitals, MSOs, medical groups, IPAs and health plans, including COO of Adventist Health Medical Groups in Glendale, California.
- 2004: The Medcor GroupFounded Medcor at 50 and grew it into an end-to-end revenue cycle partner for FQHCs.
How A Consulting Project Became The Medcor Group
After decades leading medical groups, Jon began consulting on business evaluations for hospitals weighing mergers and acquisitions. He completed dozens of them, and one pattern kept showing up: the billing operations were leaving real money on the table. When health systems asked him to take that billing over, he did, and he hired people who knew billing better than he did.
The first version of the business grew fast and then fell apart, and Jon has been open that the setback cost him nearly everything. He rebuilt by calling the people he knew and asking for one referral. That referral was a federally qualified health center, and it set the direction for everything Medcor has done since.
Built Around One Focus: FQHC Revenue Cycle Management
The lesson Jon took from rebuilding was focus. Medcor stopped trying to serve every kind of practice and committed to one: federally qualified health centers. That choice is why our team knows FQHC billing the way it does, from PPS rates and wrap payments to sliding fee discounts, and why credentialing and coding sit alongside billing in one team instead of three vendors.
Jon also invested in automation before most of the industry did. Medcor built its own RPA and bot technology at a time when competitors relied on more people, and it took years to pay off. Today that investment is part of how our team keeps claims moving while staying close to each client. Jon’s view of technology has stayed practical: it should create efficiency, turn data into insight and improve results for Medcor and for our clients.
We become part of their team. We never want to be seen as a vendor.

Relationships Come First
Ask Jon what makes Medcor different and he will tell you it is the relationships. Our clients get one-to-one relationships at the C-level and director level, plus a team that gets involved in their problems and decisions instead of waiting for a ticket. When a client needs revenue to move in a new direction, our operations and technology teams build the plan together with them.
That approach works the same way whatever system a health center runs, including OCHIN Epic, eClinicalWorks and NextGen.
Why This Work Matters To Jon
Federally qualified health centers serve the communities that need care the most, and helping them stay financially strong is the part of the job Jon enjoys most. He is just as proud of what Medcor has become for its own people. Having rebuilt once from almost nothing, he knows what a stable job means to a family, and being able to offer that to a growing team is one of the things that drives him.
